Meet Kollins. She's 3 years old and loving Ookkie!
We spoke to Kollin's mum, Kara, to learn a bit more about her journey with the Ookkie. Here's what she had to say.
What was your reason for getting an Ookkie?
She has always wanted to skate like Sky Brown. Once she saw her skate at 2 years old, she constantly asked the 2 months leading up to her birthday for a skateboard. After research about safety and building balance, we chose Ookkie!
Describe the learning experience on the Ookkie for us.
Learning with Ookkie has been amazing. When she started she had just turned 3. I could push her on the board with ease and not have to worry about her getting hurt, and she was skateboarding like she wanted! We started off cruising the straight streets and the park. When it seemed like she was ready for more of a challenge we started going to our local skate park! Oh how she was hooked! We went up and down inclines and she really got comfortable on the board. I also became more comfortable! I could rotate and move her around faster and better and she couldn't get enough.
After a couple weeks we went off some small jumps. She was shaky on the landing at first but got the hang of it quickly. Now we skate a few times a week because she begs us! We have gone to multiple skate parks around our area. We recently went to step two and took off the pole. She is doing great but definitely needs the extra support that the handle gives, which really helps her at this point! We both love how you have options and can increase the challenge as they get better.
Do you get any comments when you're out and about riding the board?
Oh my gosh! Yes! Every time we are out we get multiple comments about the board. Everyone wants it! My husband and I always say we should be sponsored by Ookkie by how many people we have referred! Many parents take their kids to the skate park on scooters and are unaware that there was an Ookkie to help their little ones skate and build balance.
How has the Ookkie helped your little one in their development?
Kollin's balance has improved so much. A once wobbly little girl has become a beast on the board. I believe it's helped her with her coordination on and off the board as well. Her little brother, Koast, is 1 years old and has been jumping on here and there too. Of course he has to do everything sister does. It's fun to watch them both increase stability and learn new skills with each ride together.
How has the Ookkie become a part of your family life and routine?
Our family doesn't get much time together. My husband works full time and goes to school. I work full time as a teacher. Kollin's and Koast both attend preschool full time. We just don't get a lot of time, and the time we do have everyone is exhausted. This has given us something to look forward to! Even if it's a short cruise for 30 minutes at the park, we cannot wait. We are never too tired to see her face light up with something she loves.
Another reason I love it is because my husband also has lots of opportunities to bond with Kollins one-on-one. If I am busy with school work, he will take her to skate. He skates too and is no professional. You could even say they are learning together. I'll catch them practicing in the house with their boards sometimes! The scuffs are removable thank goodness. As a family we cannot wait for those days when we come home and can take her skateboarding all together. We even travel to different skateparks when we can on the weekends and spend quality time together. If we are able to make it out of town on the weekends we are always wondering if they have a skatepark. Skateboarding is at the center of our family time right now thanks to Ookkie.
